The Women of San Quentin: Soul Murder of Transgender Women in Male Prisons

Click HERE to RSVP for this free event.

In The Women of San Quentin, internationally acclaimed journalist and photographer Kristin Schreier Lyseggen exposes the horrendous, inhumane treatment of women incarcerated in male U.S. prisons.

“One of the untold stories of mass incarceration is the unnecessary confinement of transgender women who have been sent to prison at unprecedented rates over the last thirty years largely for non-violent offenses. This important book illuminates this critical issue with great care, clarity and heart.” - Bryan Stevenson, Just Mercy

She tells the true stories of nine transgender women from a variety of backgrounds. This project led Kristin from a “war zone” in East Oakland; to a fundraising event with the former ‘FBI most wanted’ Angela Davis; to a one bedroom apartment in the infamous Tenderloin where a Liberian transgender immigrant woman sought respite from acid attacks and solitary confinement; from a former Aryan Republican Army member and bank robber in Illinois; to a transgender conference in Bangkok; From a LGBT conference in Nairobi, Kenya; to a project documenting black African transgender youth in the townships of South Africa; to the conservative backwaters in Georgia and Alabama.

Kristin came to understand that these people will stop at nothing to become themselves, no matter the costs. Trauma hangs over their lives; the difficulty of being who they are from childhood, and now that of incarceration, essentially imprisoned twice.

Trained as a journalist and photographer, Kristin Schreier Lyseggen is now based in Berkeley, California working on long-term independent projects with her husband, including a film on sexual abuse and human trafficking, and a book about transgender youth in rural areas and townships of South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Kristin is the author of The Boy Who Was Not a Lesbian.
