Strange Tools: Art and Human Nature

"As a neurologist, confronted every day by questions of mind, self, consciousness, and their basis, I find Alva Noë's concepts both astounding and convincing." -Oliver Sacks
It's impossible to come away from Strange Tools without having your thoughts about art, philosophy, and human nature challenged and expanded in surprising ways, so what's better than to have face-to-face access with the book's author and the opportunity to engage in a discussion of the most essential questions about art.  Especially the connection between art and philosophy - both as investigative tools meant to shed light on and reorganize the workings of our everyday lives - how we perceive, how we experience, how we communicate, what we value, and how we relate.
The University of California, Berkeley, professor Alva Noë is one of the foremost philosophers of consciousness and perception, and in his previous book, Out of Our Heads, Noë challenged the centuries-old paradigm that consciousness is something that occurs solely within the confines of our brains.
In addition to his professorship at UC Berkeley, Noë is a member of the Institute for Cognitive and Brain Sciences. He is the recipient of a 2012 Guggeinheim fellowship and it a weekly contributor to NPR's science blog 13.7:Cosmos & Culture.  Visit his website at www.alvanoe.com
