C Pam Zhang

Whew. It has been weeks since shelter-in-place in San Francisco, and the longer this goes on the more grateful I am for the sturdiness and—dare I say, magic?—of the literary community. How freaking lucky are we that books are the original technology that cuts across time and space. Books transmit us not just into other homes and lives, but into other feelings and experiences. And we can still geek out about them from afar.

In that spirit, I ask you to take a minute and think about the communities that need us right now—the ones that we desperately want to see survive past this crisis. Bookstores like Kepler's are in that category for me, and the local bakery that makes my perfect chocolate chip cookie—and also the Asian community. In the wake of worrying anti-Asian rhetoric and new hate crimes, I’m asking you to show your support by buying a book by an Asian author that has come out or will come out soon. One option is my own book, a debut novel called HOW MUCH OF THESE HILLS IS GOLD that reimagines the epic of the American West by following two orphaned siblings of Chinese descent. But if that’s not your jam, I’m absolutely certain you’ll love Minor Feelings by Cathy Park Hong, A Nail the Evening Hangs On by Monica Sok, or Braised Pork by An Yu.

Stay strong, friends! We’ll get through this.
