John Allen is a promising young man, highly educated and from a prominent family. Still he decides to become a scam artist and gets rather good at it, but then murders his business partner and is about to be sentenced for the crime. The reporter who is assigned to write a story on him uncovers some new and surprising facts; facts involving some well placed people.
