I was blown away by this book. Simple, everyday living by a local parapalegic, living in my own neighborhood. It is told with honesty, dignity and self deprecating humor.
A couple hundred years ago a couple of guys told a tale of a pair of kids taken into a forest by their dad and coming across a witch who wanted to fatten them up and eat them. The boy, an ingenious lad by the name of Hansel outwitted the witch with the cunning use of a chicken bone, and then he and his sister pushed her into the oven, killing her and saving themselves. It didn't seem that unreasonable when I was a child.
Strangely enough it still doesn't seem that unreasonable in this suspenseful retelling of the brother's Grimm's Hansel and Gretel. The wicked witch has moved from the forest (due to urban expansion) into a small town called Schoneberg with her little dog, Swift. She performs what she likes to refer to as a service to parents who want to get rid of their annoying kids. Two such parents, Mr and Mrs Blink, have also moved to Schoneberg, specifically to take advantage of this special service. Their annoying children, Sol and Connie, however, also happen to be very clever (rather like Hansel and Gretel so many years before). Can they outwit their parents, the witch, the witch's helpers (including the local librarian), and what will they do if they succeed?
