Kepler's 2020 Project in the News:
Gail Collins begins and ends When Everything Changed, her history of American women, in the same place: a woman is denied her rights because of her clothing. It is in these petty abuses that Collins’ story devastates. The progress made toward equal rights and opportunities in the past fifty years cannot be denied, and yet there remains a systemic hostility toward women’s rights. Collins explores these incidents, and the fifty years that passed between them, with a keen eye. Covering everything from civil rights to educational opportunities, abortion to housework, and told through the stories of individuals and global statistics, When Everything Changed is both comprehensive and particular. It is at once frightening, optimistic, funny, and appalling, revealing scarring attitudes in American society and offering the story of a population who would not take no for an answer. When Everything Changed should be required reading for everyone, regardless of age or gender. Alyssa S |
