Tongues of Serpents - Kepler's Staff Review

The Napoleonic Wars: With Dragons. That was all I needed to hear to pick up the “His Majesty’s Dragon” series by Naomi Novik, but for those of you who require more enticement, let me assure you that these international bestsellers are not to be missed. There’s far more here than the standard alternate history with fantasy trappings, although that part is certainly well-done and vastly enjoyable. Novik has created a series that is profoundly character-driven, and by setting up a friendship between a human and a highly intelligent dragon has side-stepped any of the romantic tensions that can often derail a series.

Tongues picks up after the cliffhanger ending of Throne of Ivory. Temeraire and Laurence have been forced by circumstances and their moral character into committing an act that most see as outright treason. Stripped of rank in the British Aerial Corps, they are exiled to a colony in Australia where new intrigue meets them. Plot threads are resolved, older characters resurface with new tensions, but the true beauty is watching the maturation of Laurence as his ideals are once again tested: how far will he go for his beloved companion? -- Sarah L.
