Strange Images of Death - Kepler's Staff Review

On his way to holiday on the Riviera, Commander Joe Sandilands of Scotland Yard agrees to escort 14 year old Dorcas to her father, who is spending the summer in a medieval castle in Southern Italy with a group of other artists. But Dorcas talks Sandilands into tracking down the mother she has never known and from there the informal cases begin to pile up.  As he arrives at the castle, he is just in time to be conscripted to solve a mystery: a vandal has destroyed a famous effigy of one of his ancestors and left a message menacing violence to come. With his hands now full of unofficial cases, Sandilands’ holiday plans vanish.

Then a child disappears and one of the castle guests is found murdered, and Sandilands’ efforts take a somber turn. While he hunts a determined killer, he must deal with temperamental artists, French aristocrats and a cranky Parisian police investigator who would like to see the case closed as quickly and quietly as possible. This is a flawless and engaging series set in India and Europe in the 1920s.  Don’t worry about reading them in order, each gem stands on its own and are amongst the absolute best of this genre! --Ann D.
