Spud - Kepler's Staff Review

Set in South Africa in 1990, the eve of the collapse of Apartheid, Spud tells the story of young John Milton, a 13-year-old boy in his first year at boarding school. Told in diary entries we learn how Spud gets his nickname (he is a "late bloomer" and I will leave the rest to your imagination). The book gives a glimpse of the uncertainty, excitement, and fear surrounding the release of Nelson Mandela, but the whole thing is seen through the eyes of a pre-pubescent choirboy whose main aim in life is to finally hit puberty.

This book is, of course, the number 1 best seller in South Africa, both for teens and adults, but the angst of being a teenager is universal, no matter the political backdrop. True to life, one cannot simply say this is a funny book, although it is, or a terribly sad book, although it does have its moments. It is, however, a ripping good read. --Antonia S.
