Kepler's 2020 Project in the News:
Spies of the Balkans focuses on Costa Zannis, a Greek police officer, a man who deals with "special problems," who is honest, discrete, and politically adept. There are spies everywhere, including Zannis’ bed, all watching to see what Hitler will do when Greece goes to war with Italy. He meets Pavlic, a police officer from Zagreb, in the army and together they help smuggle German Jews to safety, as Hitler looks likely to invade Yugoslavia then Greece, to clean up Mussolini’s mess. This is noir spy fiction at its best, reminding me of Graham Green, John Le Carre and Casablanca, with a sprinkling of romance to lighten the tone. --Angela M. |
