Joe Gores, author of several mysteries and also one who worked a few decades ago as a private investigator in San Francisco, has written what feels like a very plausible prequel to Dashiell Hammet's The Maltese Falcon. It's difficult to pull off a prequel, (or even a sequel!) of another writer, and Gores does not attempt to imitate Hammet's style. But Gores is a good writer, knows the investigation busines, knows San Francisco, and stays, I think, true to the character of Sam Spade. Mike C. |
