Name: Capricorn Anderson. Home-schooled and raised on Garland Farm commune by his hippie grandmother, Rain. His sheltered life means he has never eaten pizza, watched television, handled money, cut his hair or done just about anything a “normal” teenager would do. Name: Zach Powers. Big-man-on-campus and class bully at Claverage Middle School (fondly known as C-Average Middle School.) Zach can’t wait to continue the tradition of nominating and then torturing the biggest nerd for 8th grade class president. Name: Hugh Winkleman. The number one class nerd and king of the wedgies and dreads his 8th grade year at C-Average as he is certain to be elected class president. Hugh sees his destiny transform before his eyes when Cap takes his place as campus geek. Told from various points of view this is a funny look at the impact that one sincere, well-intentioned outsider can make on middle school social structure. Capricorn, Cap, Anderson is thrown into Claverage Middle School “with no more street smarts than a newborn baby” while his grandmother is briefly hospitalized. Intending to have fun at his expense, he’s nominated for class president by the A-list crowd. Confused, but determined to do his best, Cap eventually turns the tables on his tormentors but not before he is barraged by practical jokes and endures endless humiliation. Reminiscent of Jerry Spinelli’s Stargirl, this is a delightful and amusing story where you will cheer for the hemp-wearing Cap at every turn of a practical joke. Reviewed by Karen Z. |
