Kepler's 2020 Project in the News:
Susannah Charleson trained for years with Search and Rescue dog teams
in Texas. It’s exacting, exciting, and tough work that demands total
commitment. With her trainer’s encouragement, Susannah was ready to
get her own SAR dog. Or was she? She had doubts about training a puppy,
but no time to dwell on them as she bundled her wiggly puppy, Puzzle,
onto the plane. Over the next two years, Charleson and Puzzle learned
and trained together as they grew into a true SAR team responding to
rescues, searches, and recoveries. Charleson’s obstacles included
overcoming her first rappel from a tall building and teaching Puzzle
to distinguish aggressive snakes from garden hoses. Most importantly,
they learned to trust each other’s instincts and subtle cues, the
key to all successful SAR teams. Charleson’s book honors the incredible
bond between working dogs and their human partners. It celebrates working
towards a greater good.
