Samuel Johnson: a Biography - Kepler's Staff Review

You may have read (but if you haven’t, you really should – it’s terrific) Boswell’s “Life of Johnson” – a justly celebrated and entertaining look at Samuel Johnson, one of the towering figures of British literary history. Peter Martin brings to life and lays bare, though, not only the labors that produced Johnson’s many and varied writings but also conditions that made his life one filled with extreme difficulties. Life-threatening health problems in his youth, severe self-doubt, bouts of the deepest depression and several physical deformities and peculiarities were among Johnson’s challenges given little attention in most of his earlier biographies. Also shown here are Johnson’s deep concerns regarding women writers, slavery and poverty, though the common impression of Johnson is one of a fairly conservative nature. All in all, this is a thorough look at a fascinating, complex and accomplished life.
