The Ramen King and I - Kepler's Staff Review

This book made me laugh, snort, giggle, and squeak. I read it while traveling, and probably disturbed my neighbors. It’s not just a quirky comedy though (which is what I expected from the fantastically ridiculous cover). It’s a memoir, a travelogue, a story of obsession, and a search for the things that make you comfortable inside your own skin.

Andy Raskin’s love life is broken. While trying to fix it, he turns to Momofuku Ando, the mysterious and enigmatic inventor of instant ramen, for guidance. He reads about Momofuku Ando, writes long and unsent letters to him, tries to meet him at the headquarters of instant ramen in Japan. He becomes convinced that understanding how Momofuku Ando discovered instant ramen will help him discover how to untangle his life; and, in a way, it does.

This book will make you hungry. It will have you longing for sushi and noodles. It will acquaint you with the beautiful absurdities of Japanese culture, of sex and desire, and of life in general. It will make you laugh (probably out loud), and it will make you consider the serious business of being a human being.
