Kepler's 2020 Project in the News:
For most people, a homemade meal is soothing, delicious, and full of love. Rose Edelstein is the exception. As a young girl, Rose takes a large bite of her mother's homemade chocolate-lemon cake and is struck by the sadness that overwhelms her taste buds. With the help of her older brother's charismatic best friend, George, Rose discovers that instead of tasting salty, sweet, and savory, she experiences the deepest (and often darkest) feelings of the person preparing her food. This bizarre secret talent consumes Rose, and she spends endless amounts of time finding prepared foods that will not burn her tongue with feelings of anger or sadness. This tale is odd and a bit dark (I like to compare it to the color burgundy: dark, yet still pretty), but ultimately charming and uplifting. Bender's writing is easy to read and absolutely lovely. -- Laura G. |
