Kepler's 2020 Project in the News:
In January of 1910, Paris experienced its worst natural disaster of the last few centuries. Higher than normal snow melt in the mountains combined with heavier than normal rainfall to create a massive flood, forcing tens of thousands out of their homes and businesses. Told from the perspective of actual victims and the people trying to help them, we get a thoroughly researched history of this catastrophe in a book that reads like a novel. We also come to understand the delicate fabric of this city, where political tensions and a distrust of the military and government lead many to fear a total collapse into anarchy. Instead, Parisians came together to save themselves, and came to appreciate the efforts of a military that came to save the city, rather than occupy it. Jeffrey Jackson’s Paris Under Water is a fascinating read that resonates today with everyone of us who have witnessed the surprising humanity that surfaces in times of great duress.
