Kepler's 2020 Project in the News:
There
is something infectious about a fairy tale, something that takes up
residence in the dark corners of the imagination and reappears at the
strangest times. Fairy tales are not just pretty stories for children;
they are portraits of fond dreams and hidden desires, things so
familiar to us that they exist forever, just dressed up in different
clothes.
Here are forty stories told by some of the fiercest imaginations of contemporary fiction. John Updike and Joyce Carol Oates take on “Bluebeard,” Michael Cunningham and Karen Joy Fowler discover “The Wild Swans.” These are new fairy tales. They slice through the masks of unnamed princes and far-off kingdoms. They possess the magic and nightmares of the world as it is now, but are still somehow recognizable as something that belongs after “Once upon a time...” -- Megan K. |
