Kepler's 2020 Project in the News:
This is hands down the feel good book of the year. It is funny, poignant, and original in its characterization and format. Told retrospectively in essay, letter, e-mail and IM form, this story is inspired by an English assignment to a class of 11th graders. Our three main characters all choose the same year: Freshman. T.C. sees new girl Alejandra and falls for her right away, but he should have listened to his "brother" Augie when he said she wouldn't fall for the usual tricks. T.C.: Cocky baseball nut lives most of the time with his Dad and brother Augie. Except he and Augie aren't actually related, they just decided that they were going to be brother's after T.C.'s Mom died when he was in 1st grade and their parents really had no choice but to go along. The rest of the time he lives with Augie's folks. Alé : the Diplomat's daughter who doesn't have a diplomatic bone in her body and wants to be a dancer. Augie: The only person in his life who doesn't realize he's gay is himself, (everyone else felt the passion for musical theatre, and Liza in particular, were a dead givaway) and is somewhat surprised to discover that no one really cares. And then there is Hucky, the six year-old deaf kid in foster care who watches T.C. play baseball and bonds only with him; but he believes Mary Poppins is real and will one day come to save him. And how is a high school freshman supposed to deal with that? Three teenagers, one kid, and five parents who watch and guide, but ultimately can only stand back in awe! This book is a fantastic read, and Julie Andrews is awesome!
