Kepler's 2020 Project in the News:
My Life As a fake asks the reader to understand the obsessiveness of poetry based on the real life Ern Malley affair in Australia. We meet Christopher Chubb, a down on his luck Australian poet living in Malaysia who perpetrated a literary hoax that was meant to protest literary pretentiousness but ultimately killed his publisher.
He meets Sarah Wode-Douglass, the editor of a London based poetry magazine, and shows her a manuscript that she believes is a work of genius. But is it true? And is it his? But as she obsessively tries to get her hands on the manuscript, Chubb tells his story, a tale so magical, so lyrical, so incredible, that you want to believe it. And his story has everything: hoaxes, literary creations coming to life, murder, kidnapping, poisoning, obsession, and the captivating lure of great poetry. And ultimately it tells of the inherent untruthfulness of creativity. It's a complex book, a messy book, that swings from Australia to London, Kuala Lumpa, and the jungles of Malaysia. If Carey tells us we are all guilty of hiding something, he most certainly is not hiding his talent. --Angela M. |
