Kepler's 2020 Project in the News:
If you're tired of the namby
pamby, and are looking for a hardcore reality thrill and chill ride
that's all true, then I think I have the book for you. "My Friend the Mercenary" is a harrowing, true account of a journalist's adventures in
the Liberian civil war and the shadowy world of mercenaries. James
Brabazon, a British journalist, travels into Liberia during the civil
war of 2001-2002 to document the LURD rebels fight against the dictator
Charles Taylor. Realizing the very real danger that he will encounter,
he hires Nick Du Toit, a former South African commando turned mercenary
as his body guard. The two become fast friends as they embark on a 400
mile journey across the jungles and war torn villages of Liberia. Along
the way the encounter sudden and lethal ambushes, horrid front line
executions, dysentery, starvation and complete exhaustion. Making
friends with a mercenary has its disadvantages, and Nick becomes
involved in the fascinating intrigue and politics of the shadowy world
of soldiers of fortune. This true account of a little known conflict and
little known way of life is a brisk summer read for the cravers of bad
assness. --Mike L.
