Kepler's 2020 Project in the News:
Did you wonder about Quentin, Julia, Elliot, and Janet now that they are the kings and queens of Fillory? Grossman lets us see what it’s like to rule a magic kingdom, and we discover that Quentin is listless – he wants more than the perfect but dull royal life. He wants an adventure, the chance to be a hero, a quest. We also see what a quest is really like, whether big or small, from searching for a hare, sailing to an island at the edge of the world, or even trying to stop magic from disappearing.
What I enjoyed most about this book is Julia’s story. We learn about her background, what a hedgewitch actually is, how she learned magic, and about the people, like her, who want to learn magic but don’t get into Brakebills. They’ve caught a glimpse of a magical world but then hit a dead end. What would you do and what you would you give up for just another glimpse? It’s a dark, twisted account and she takes center stage in this sequel: angry, brilliant, bitter. How does she keep hold of her sanity?
The Magician King is all at once smart, funny, dark, terrifying, and provocative. And the end, well it is not easy. Beautifully written, this is a tale of the making of a hero and of magic itself. It should not be missed. --Angela M. |
