Lyddie - Kepler's Staff Review

Lyddie's no stranger to hard work. Ever since their father left for the West, her mother has been a little off and it's been up to Lyddie to take care of her siblings and their Vermont farm. But when the farm is leased to strangers to cover debts and her brother and sisters sent to live with other people, Lyddie heads to the textile mills of Lowell, Massachusetts to make enough money to reunite her family.

Katherine Paterson is a master of realistic fiction for young readers and Lyddie is among her best works. Paterson majestically captures the bravery of the thousands of young girls who worked at the Lowell mills during the American Industrialization, enduring long hours, low wages, and dangerous and unhealthy conditions to support their families. This is a story of everyday heroism; of standing up against injustice, even when it would be easier to follow the crowd.

Lyddie remains one of my favorite "realistic heroine" tales to this day.
