Last Night in Twisted River - Kepler's Staff Review

For all of you John Irving fans, mark your calendars for the October 27th release of his newest saga. It is the story of Dominic Baciagaupo, a cook at a withering logging operation in a small town in northern New Hampshire. When his twelve year old son accidentally kills the lover of the crazed and crooked constable, it sets off a lifetime adventure of running from the avenging lawman. His only protector, Ketchum, helps keep them one step ahead of the law for over 50 years. A libertarian logger, Ketchum believes in only his own laws.

As we follow Dominic and his son Danny, and later Danny’s son Joe to Boston, then to Iowa, then Vermont and finally to Toronto, we are witnessing a social commentary on America over the last half century. It is also possible that we are seeing a parallel to Irving’s own lifetime of writing.

Irving’s characters are three dimensional and believable and sometimes rather bizarre. His description of place is spot on. If you enjoyed “Cider House Rules” or “A Prayer for Owen Meany” give yourself the gift of “Last Night in Twisted River.”
