I was blown away by this book. Simple, everyday living by a local parapalegic, living in my own neighborhood. It is told with honesty, dignity and self deprecating humor.
Meet Max, the Royal Cook's dog and the King's Taster. It is Max's job to taste the food for poison before it is served to the King. Every day he puts his life on the line: licking bowls and eating leftovers, scraps, "plus whatever anyone drops under the table."
When a new boy King ascends the throne, Cook makes his finest, most delicious dishes. A "feast fit for a king" indeed! The king refuses to eat; lucky for Max, who gets to eat the rebuffed meal, not so lucky for Cook, who must make something the king will eat before it is "off with his head!"
A search for new yummy recipes takes Max and Cook around the world: delectable French fries in France, scrumptious pizza in Italy--the king will surely eat these! What kid- or adult- wouldn't? The King, that's who!
The illustrations in this palate-pleasing story are a feast for the eyes. Snippets of recipes are cleverly pieced into the paintings in a collage-like fashion. Look closely and you just might discover why the king refuses Cook's food (we are what we eat!).
