I was blown away by this book. Simple, everyday living by a local parapalegic, living in my own neighborhood. It is told with honesty, dignity and self deprecating humor.
The Cold War is at the freezing point, with the Soviets and Americans looking down their sights at one another, when the unexpected happens: Eisenhower invites NikitaKhrushchev to tour the United States!
The trip turns out to be a mix of security problems, insults, laughing, speeches, rage, applause, drama, and humor, and becomes America's number one media event. Indeed, while Khrushchev gives many speeches to the media, the temperature rises as he faces the untamed questions of a free press. Famous for his quick anger, Khrushchev blows his top at several of these proceedings, threatening nuclear war. Will the media be responsible for a nuclear holocaust?
What surprised me about this book is Khrushchev sense of humor. I found myself laughing out loud at his clever responses to the most barbed questions. This is no dry text book. It manages to be both funny and serious while the ominous threat of nuclear winter looms overhead.
It read a great deal like Dr. Strangelove. Reviewed by James
