Surprises make me nervous. Once you've had a real surprise, one that knocks the wind out of you and changes your life, all the little surprises remind you of that big one. - Jeremy Fink Jeremy Fink is one month away from his thirteenth birthday and little does he know that a surprise 13th birthday present may change the course of his life forever. But Jeremy isn't fond of surprises. When he was eight years old, his father died suddenly and Jeremy hasn't truly recovered from that surprise. Jeremy is a city kid that lives in New Jersey with his mother. His best friend Lizzy lives in the apartment next door and they have been inseparable for years. Opposites truly do attract! Jeremy is a quiet kid who follows the rules and Lizzy, on the other hand, is outspoken and constantly getting them both into all sorts of trouble. It was Lizzy who talked the postman into giving her and Jeremy the registered box that was supposed to be signed for by Jeremy's mom, and it was Lizzy who talked Jeremy into opening the box. The contents of this box were shocking and surprising to both of them! Inside was a beautiful wooden box. Engraved on the box were these words: The Meaning of Life: For Jeremy Fink to Open On His 13th Birthday Jeremy and Lizzy were both speechless. Jeremy could recognize his father's handiwork anywhere! Now all he has to do is find the missing keys to the box and then he can know the meaning of life according to his father. But this task will prove to be much harder than expected.
