Here's the basic pitch: a plane full of beauty queens gets stranded
on a desert island. They have two options: give up and die, or use
everything at their disposal to stay alive. Sound dire and depressing?
Let me tell you, this book is one of the effing funniest books
I've read all year. Lesser writers would make the girls completely
shallow and without skill, but Bray gives us innovative, fascinating
girls who don't balk at learning to build, create, and support
each other. And these aren't Little Miss Perfects. They deal with
their own prejudices and come out stronger for it. Every time I thought I felt a standard
trope coming on (the humorless feminist, the ditzy blonde, the overly religious
girl) Libba Bray would neatly side-step and subvert it.
What I find most impressive is that Bray has written a book that takes on major
issues, but it doesn't read like an "issue" book. I would cheerfully recommend it to
everyone, if for no other reason than that it's a damn good and delightfully fun read.

Pierce Oliviera knows all about dying – she did it when she was
15, at the bottom of their pool in the middle of winter, tangled
up in her red scarf. But since the doctors brought her back,
nothing has really been the same and trouble is a constant companion.
Now, almost two years later, her parents are divorced
and Pierce and her mother have relocated to Isla Huesos, the
Island of Bones. But a fresh start is hard to find when your past
follows, showing up in the island cemetery and calling your
name. (By the way, his name is John, and he just might be the ruler of the Underworld.).
Pierce has lots of questions about her NDE (near-death-experience) and
absolutely no answers as trouble starts anew on the island. With death all around
and love lurking in the shadows, Pierce must tread carefully – there may not be a
next time. This is the first book in the Abandon trilogy, a modern re-telling of the
myth of Persephone and the Underworld. – Amanda H, Book Fair Director

Sam and Riddle have been on their own for a long time. Sure,
they lived with their dad, in dozens and dozens of towns, always
just one step ahead of the law, but he didn’t take care of them,
let alone enroll them in school. The important thing was that
they got by, even as they faded into the background and were
left alone. Sam looks forward to Sundays when he can slip into
the backs of churches and listen to the music unnoticed. Which
is why it is so startling to have the girl in the front of this church
look right at him while she sings. It doesn’t make any sense.
Emily had a perfectly fine life: a lovely home, caring parents, no major bumps in
the road. She takes interest in other people and believes in destiny. So during her
church solo on Sunday, she sings to the boy in the back row and it all makes sense. I
loved this book! I loved the characters – their voices, their honesty. Rich in humor,
subtlety, and suspense, I'll Be There is certainly a book worth falling for.

June 14, 1941: a lovely summer
evening in Lithuania. In many
homes like Lina's, families go about
their perfectly normal activities until
thunderous yelling shatters their
lives forever. Soldiers inform them
they are now enemies of Stalin's
Russian state. The dreaded NKVD storm through their
apartment, ordering them to pack their possessions.
How do you decide what to pack in twenty minutes?
How do you begin to think? And where is Lina’s father?
Lina’s family joins many others on an overcrowded
cattle train rolling northwards. It's now obvious to Lina
that the recent whispered meetings in their home were
dangerous, and why her mother sewed family valuables
into her winter coat. Their only chance of survival will
be through cunning, bravery, and pride. Moving from
rail stations to work camps and north toward the Siberian
Arctic, the cattle car families must continually find
ways to survive. Together, they build a steely resolve to
never bow to the tyranny of Stalin's Russia. This novel
is based on real people exiled from the Baltic states.
Unlike Lina and the remaining lucky few from her boxcar,
many never survived. – Marilyn S, Book Fairs

Cassel’s family is dangerous. They
are mobsters, con artists, murderers,
and magic workers; and Cassel
might be the most dangerous of
them all, except that he still can’t
remember the entire truth of his
past. Everything that he knows
about himself is a lie, and there is
no one left to trust, not even himself.
This book is an absolute pleasure, a thrill and a high
speed vault into a world that is dark, compelling, and
cruel. It’s a sharp fantasy taken in the company of
characters who feel astonishingly real. You’ll fall hard
for them: Cassel’s grandfather, an assassin; his mother,
who bends emotions; his lying, mobster brothers; and
Lila, the girl he loves and the princess of the criminal
underworld. Most of all, you’ll be helpless before the
charm of Cassel himself and the feeling that these
are people you need to spend time with, not because
they’re nice or good, but because they are fascinating.
They are the most dangerous of friends.

In Veronica Roth’s harsh future
people are divided into five factions:
Abnegation, Amity, Candor,
Dauntless, and Erudite. When
you reach the age of 16, you are
tested to see where you are best
suited and then given a choice.
That choice will affect everything
from where you live, what you believe, and whom you
befriend. If you don’t pass the test once you’ve picked
your faction, you become factionless, living without
community. And you might not live through the initiation
process.
Beatrice grows up in Abnegation but chooses Dauntless.
She has no idea how dangerous that choice is for
her, especially as she has tested Divergent – showing
traits of more than one faction. She is a wild card.
And wild cards are dangerous. Can Tris keep her true
nature a secret? Can she protect her family and her
new faction? This fast-paced, all-action page turner
held me captive from beginning to end. It is violent
and dangerous, political and thoughtful, provocative
and scary. And it is very, very good. I can’t recommend
it highly enough.

Alex, I wanted you to walk away and live a normal life. But
MI6 made it impossible for you to say no – again. This time
it all starts with the extraordinary Elgin Marbles, which are
housed in the British Museum. The British government has
consistently refused to give them back to the Greeks. But
Scorpia has a plan to force the government’s hand and, of
course, it involves you. Getting you undercover again, this
time in Egypt. And Alan Blunt falls for the whole scheme.
This time everyone on your team is working in the dark. The plot is as clever
as ever, with some great new characters, the reemergence of an old enemy, an
extraordinary reveal (you really can’t see it coming!), and a tragic loss. I won’t
give it away, but ah, this adventure is just as adrenaline-soaked and fast-paced
as your previous escapades, but darker, edgier, sadder. It is a book to read in one
sitting, a wonderful ending to a great series, but Alex, I shall miss you.

In The Enemy we followed the fate of a group of children
holed up in a supermarket as they banded together to protect
themselves from the disease-ridden adults who have turned
into Zombies. This stunning companion book tells the story
of a different group of kids at a different time in the epidemic:
The Beginning.
Away at boarding school, these are the kids who see the first
YouTube video made by “The Scared Kid.” It seems pretty realistic, but it can’t
possibly be real! Then their teachers start to turn, start to attack each other and
the kids. Some of the older kids turn too, while the teachers that remain healthy
try to protect the students. The night after the last teacher, their last protector,
turns, the kids are left alone. They must fend for themselves and figure out how
to survive in this new world. Creepier than the original, this is a fantastic novel

Kate is but four years old when her mother enters her room
one night, and, with tears in her eyes, tells her to look after
Michael and Emma, her younger brother and sister. The next
thing Kate remembers is waking up in an orphanage. Her
parents have gone. Ten years later, Kate, Michael, and Emma
have cycled through progressively worse orphanages when
they are sent to a place called Cambridge Falls. This place is
different and strange. They are the only three children there,
and they find themselves completely at the mercy of the mysterious Dr. Pim.
As the children begin to explore, their latent talents emerge, and they find
themselves traveling back in time to unearth a great mystery and stop an evil
plot. This is a great beginning to a new fantasy series, and to be honest with you,
I haven’t been this excited since Michael Scott’s The Alchemyst.

Jacob Wonderbar is that kid we all remember from elementary
school. You know the one
. the guy who could reduce a
substitute teacher to tears while his classmates attempted to
stifle their laughter at his antics. Jacob is quite content in his
slacker role and even has the begrudging approval of his best
friends and partners in crime, Dexter and Sarah. However,
everything changes when they meet a silver space traveler
and trade him a corn dog for his space ship. From that point forward, all bets
are off, and Jacob and his friends must rally together to save themselves and the
universe.
This is a very clever book, chock full of zany characters, witty banter, and planets
with inhabitants beyond our imagination. It is sure to delight both parents
and kids with its subtle (and sometimes not so subtle!) humor. While some may
feel that the title character is one we’ve met time and again in children’s literature,
I think this book has refreshing twists that will appeal to 3rd-5th graders,
boys and girls alike. – Julie B, Book Fairs
