Ice Song - Kepler's Staff Review

This is by far one of the best debut novels I have ever read.  Sorykah Minuit is a scholar, an engineer, and the sole woman aboard an ice-drilling submarine in the frozen land of the Sigue, an alternate Earth-like planet.  The planet is ravaged by environmental degradations as well as pure and simple greed.  There is a fast rate of genetic mutations in the human population which led to the existence of the "somatics”, the "Traders” and other wild variations of the "normal person”.  The "somatics" are people with mostly animal genes/mutations.  Sorykah is a "Somatic Trader" and has the genetic makeup that allows her to switch genders, a change that mostly happens involuntarily under stress. Most traders are infertile and retain the memories of their dual persona.  Sorykah is different, she is the mother of twins and does not recall the other half of her dual persona.  I look forward to Tattoo, the sequel which is due out in 2010.  Kirsten Kasai is currently at work on the third book Saudade.
