Hunger - Kepler's Staff Review

Three months after the disappearance of everyone over the age of 14, and despite the hard work of many of the kids trapped in this strange new world, things are only getting harder. Food has finally run out. Everyone left in the Fall-Out Alley Youth Zone (FAYZ) is starving. As more kids begin to develop mutant powers, the group is splitting into hostile mutant vs. "normal" factions. But the kids aren't the only one with strange powers. The Darkness is lurking outside of town . . . and it is hungry.

Hunger has everything I loved about Gone and more. In this series, Michael Grant depicts a bold (and at times terrifying) picture of human nature in a world without adults. Hunger is both an engaging play between good and evil and an accurate representation of the difficulty of making choices in a survival of the fittest post-apocalyptic world. The residents of the FAYZ have had their world turned upside down. They are suddenly faced with the task of making life changing decisions with little to no guidance in determining right from wrong. Think X-Men without the wise council of Professor Xavier (and quite a few more villains). Do not miss this powerful examination of how humans deal with difference.
