Here Comes the Garbage Barge - Kepler's Staff Review

By Jonah Winter

The first time I saw this book, I thought, "No way." The pictures are weird and it's about garbage. Boy was I wrong! I love this book! It all started back in 1987 when a little town called Islip, NY on Long Island had a BIG  problem: 3,168 tons of garbage and nowhere to put it!  Along came the garbage barge, who hauls the junk down the coast of North America looking for a place to dump it. Only nobody will allow him to stop. I laughed all along the journey, often out loud. After 162 days the barge returns back to Islip a whole lot smellier. But this time a judge orders Islip to put their garbage in a landfill.

The ideas to ponder are many...how to take care of our garbage; who should take responsibility for it; and how did we create so much garbage in the first place? The illustrations are made from sets build out of toys, recycled goods, found items and even some rotten banana peels....it's just as much fun to look at the pictures as to read the book.
