In the Heart of the Sea - the Tragedy of the Whaleship Essex - Kepler's Staff Review

Completely captivating and surprisingly accessible to those even with a minimal interest in whaling (I still have no interest in such things).  In the Heart if the Sea tells the true story of the whaleship Essex, the inspiration for Herman Melville’s incomparable classic Moby Dick.  A maritime historian by trade, Nathaniel Philbrick is a skilled writer and he subtly yet surely will transport you back to Natucket circa 1820.  His prose is beautiful yet simple - perfectly appropriate for this shockingly detailed account of an amazing tragedy.  In 1819 the whaleship Essex was rammed by a very large sperm whale, irreparably damaging the ship in the open ocean and leaving the crew struggling to survive.  While the story of the Essex has an endless amount of overt drama - starvation, thirst, and cannibalism - Philbrick elegantly maintains a scholarly approach. Ultimately, it is a consuming story of hope even in the bleakest of times.  Laura G.
