Kepler's 2020 Project in the News:
I have a confession: there is a special group of picture books that have the ability to make me get misty eyed in the middle of Kepler's while I am working. Titles like I Will Always Love You, Nana Upstairs and Nana Downstairs, and Koala Lou belong to this elite group. This book is the newest member. In The Heart and the Bottle a young girl is alive with wonder and curiosity until the day something terrible happens. The young girl decides to protect her heart by placing it in a glass bottle. She has discovered how to protect her heart from pain but has she also lost something? Oliver Jeffers delivers a story about grief, mourning, and their result is so succinct and subtle only he could tell it. The interplay between his imaginative and simple illustrations with his spare text is lovely and speaks volumes without having to. The Heart and the Bottle is so beautiful, poignant, and above all hopeful it should wear a warning: CAUTION: THIS BOOK MAY CAUSE ADULTS TO WEEP IN FRONT OF CHILDREN. PLEASE OBSERVE THAT TISSUES AND EXCUSES OF FOREIGN OBJECTS IN EYE MAY BE REQUIRED. And you thought The Giving Tree was tough... Reviewed by Shannon |
