Hardball - Kepler's Staff Review

Welcome back VI, we’ve been waiting to follow your next case since Fire Sale.

In Hardball, VI Warshawski is asked to locate a man who went missing in 1967. And this search leads her down a peripatetic path to her father’s old coworkers and extended family, via a gang leader, to tales of racism and police brutality and the march by Martin Luther King that ended in a white riot. Add to this a murdered nun, a re-opened murder case, and whispers about her father and you can see why Paretsky has another winner on her hands.

It comes as no surprise that people desperately want VI to leave this case alone. But when her young cousin disappears even VI is astonished to discover the depths of corruption in Chicago politics and how far it taints.

This is a multilayered, complex story - part mystery, part social criticism, part glimpse into Chicago history.  It leaves you amazed at how well Paretsky manages to pull all the strands together and grateful for such a strong, multi-talented, thoughtful heroine. --Angela M
