Locked in the attic by her wicked stepmother, Liesl is desperate to escape, to run away to the last place she was happy when her parents were still alive.  She is helped in this endeavor by Po, a boy (maybe, it's hard to tell and these things don't really matter) from The Other Side.

Apprenticed to an evil alchemist, Will is forced to escape after a delivery mix-up. Hunted by the alchemist and the lady premiere and a man with a hat (really) Will meets up with Liesl and the two of them (along with Po) set off to return color to the world.

Beautifully written, this is part Cinderella, part Hansel & Gretel, and storytelling at it's best.  A fantastic and fantastical adventure.

She's come with news about the notorious madman in the Asylum, Fetid Stenchley, whose escape could bring him their way - yikes!

Stranger things could happen...and they do! Can they escape from the super secret laboratory and the dreaded clutches of Stenchley as he readies his horrible transference with Thaddeus? A laugh every minute makes this a great book to read!

In a world where creativity of any kind is "Unwanted", children who display any artistic or creative leanings (singing, dancing, drawing) are sent to their deaths in The Purge.  At least that is what both the unwanted children and the rest of society believe, but actually the children discover that they have been rescued and brought to a wondrous place full of color, music, and magic.  They know, however, that they can only ever be safe as long as they remain hidden from their loved ones.  Alex and his twin brother Aaron have always been different, raised by their parents who fit into this society as "Necessaries" (the people who cook, clean, farm, and do all the work that needs to be done). Aaron knows that he has a great future ahead of him as a "Wanted," someone who will go to university and learn how to serve society as a member of the ruling class. The link between these boys, however, may be the very thing that brings down what both of them hold most dear.

At a time when school budgets are being slashed and the arts are being cut for an entire generation of children, this book reminds us of how important the arts are to any society, and how terrifying creative thinking is to those who wish to control.

This book has one of the most engaging opening chapters I have read in a very long time, and the delight just continues until the last page.

Twelve year old Prue is watching her baby brother, Mac, when she finds herself unable to save him from being abducted by a murder of crows.  Following him into the "Unpassable Wilderness" Prue finds herself, along with Curtis, a boy from school who insisted on tagging along, in the middle of The WildWood.  A mysterious place inhabited by strange humans and talking animals, Prue and Curtis find themselves embroiled in an ongoing war as they embark on their quest to find and rescue Mac from the crows.

I love this book because it brings alive childhood curiosities of ghosts and evil places that are hiding just beneath the surface of 'normal'.
It all starts in Widowsbury.  The town not marked on any map, but the one with the vandalized sign that warns "If you lived here, you'd regret it by now."   Why? Well, as the pages turned and the story unfurled, I learned very quickly that this wasn't any 'normal' little town.   And in this town is a not so normal little school, Widowsbury's Madame Gertrude's School for Girls.

Three little girls, Adelaide Foss, Maggie Borland, and Beatrice Alfred are also not quite normal.  They are bullied for their peculiarities and the girls spend a lot of time in the school's inhospitable library, in detention.  But then on the anniversary of a terrible storm that had ravaged Widowbury twelve years ago, for twelve days straight, more strange things begin to happen.  Townspeople mysteriously begin to disappear and it turns out that only with the talents of these three strange girls is there any hope of saving Widowsbury from a twelve-year-old curse.
Who is behind these sudden disappearances?  And will the girls be able to fend off the evil Madame Gertrude who seems to have an especially good knack at imprisoning them just when they are most needed?  Keep the pages turning and you'll find out what lurks just beneath the surface...

In a nutshell, this is Diary of a Wimpy Kid for Star Wars fans. Naturally, when I saw this book, my first thoughts were, The Force is Strong in this One. Dwight is a sixth grade oddball who mostly keeps to himself until one day when he folds an origami Yoda out of paper, perches it on his finger, and begins to give advice to his classmates. But here's the thing: the advice actually works. Each chapter is written by a different classmate, and they share in detail both their crisis and what Dwight, speaking as Origami Yoda, advised them to do. I laughed so hard that I cried. Then I read it again! Read this, you must. Share it, you will.

In 1831 a young clergyman and amateur naturalist is given the opportunity to join a voyage across the seas with the Royal Navy on a survey mission to South America. Charles Darwin jumped at this opportunity and he joined the crew of The Beagle as a Naturalist. The 19th Century was a time of great study in the natural sciences. Darwin was excited to be part of this adventure as he found geology, zoology, and botany all fascinating. In the five-year voyage of The Beagle he collected and studied thousands of specimens. This wondrously illustrated book allows us to travel and discover with the young Charles. It's presents passages from Darwin's and diaries, letters from his journey; maps and diagrams of specimens collected. It's just the perfect way to introduce the work of Charles Darwin to children. It was, of course, the voyage described in this book where Darwin began to formulate new ideas about the beginnings of life on earth which changed his life path from that of clergyman to scientist. Many years later he published two seminal works of science: The Origin of the Species and The Descent of Man - both of which were highly controversial at the time, and remain so in some parts of the world.

Neftali ponders the world from his bedroom window in his homeland of Chile. Always the awkward and frail dreamer, he prefers to lose himself in his limitless imagination than with other children. Neftali's words leap from the pages of this book through Peter Sis's magical illustrations and will fill the readers' world with the sound of the Chilean forests, the waters of Puerto Saavedra, and most importantly with Neftali's own words. Something's rotten in Banesville, NY! This is Apple country. Everything and everyone depends on the crop--apple farming, apple canning, apple baking, apple art. But even the apple festival brings little to celebrate, especially when mysterious "ghostly" sightings bring panic and plummeting property values to this already imperiled farming town. But fear not, the high school paper, The Core, has a fresh teen reporter, Hildy Biddle who can smell the putrid intentions in the air. Like her deceased father who was a quintessential reporter in search of the facts, this apple does not fall far from the tree. The official town newspaper, The Bee, begins to feed its readers and engorge its circulation with sensational stories of fear and dread. A crop of TV reporters, psychics, and amusement park developers move into town. Farmers begin to lose heart and sell their homes. But Hildy doggedly peels away supposition, superstition, and innuendo, even after The Core is forcibly shut down. Armed with the five "Ws"--"Who?" "What" "When?" "Where?" and "Why?, she aims to save her town from foreclosure and the worst kind of national exposure on America's "Top Ten Most Haunted List." The quirky citizen's of Banesville, The Happiest Town in the Happy Apple Valley, are funny, and earnestly inspirational. The "Elders against Evil Brigade" is unforgettable. The plot is crisp, and our heroine is deliciously witty. Peeled is an entirely fun and wholesome read!
