The Gospel According to Larry - Kepler's Staff Review

Put yourself in Josh's shoes for a second. You're 17, a prodigy, have already been accepted to Princeton, but your best friend/crush prefers simple-minded jocks (don't they always?), your dad's girlfriend is obsessed with Humpty Dumpty memorabilia, and you want to make the world a better place. What do you do?

Simple. You create a blog. Josh calls it, The World According to Larry. At first he writes it just to amuse himself. He rants about consumer culture, and the exploitation of third world workers, celebrity culture, shallow friends, and everything that is on his mind. He posts pictures of his possessions, parodies advertising campaigns, and watches in amazement as more and more people start to read his rants, discuss what he says, even start fan clubs. And now that Beth is a fan, should he tell her who Larry really is? Then Bono discovers his blog, uses some of his ideas, and suddenly Larry becomes a hero, an icon, a god.  Everyone is talking about him. They plan a free festival around his ideas (Larryfest) and there's one journalist who is determined to "out" him.

Can Larry stay in cognito, hold onto who he is, and help change the world as he himself becomes a celebrity, worshipped but trapped inside his new identity?

As an unrepentant book pusher, I am always thrilled when someone hands me a book and say, "you have to read this." This is such a book and it's great - realistic, funny, insightful, and thought-provoking. It'll change the way you think about materialism, friendship, loyalty, privacy, fame, and the media. Read it with a friend, read it with a group, but read it.
