Ruth and Dana are “birthday sisters,” born on the same day in a rural New Hampshire hospital to two very different families. As they grow up, Ruth becomes a romantic and a dreamer, honing her skills as an artist, while Dana is a scientist drawn to the farmlands. Neither ever feels comfortable in her own family.
Joyce Maynard takes us through fifty years of their intertwined lives, from childhood and awkward adolescence, through first loves, marriages, divorces, and deaths. This is a powerful story of love, rejection, acceptance, and forgiveness. There were pages that brought tears to my eyes, and ones that brought joy to my soul. A great summer read! -- Nancy S. |
