The Girl Who Fell From the Sky - Kepler's Staff Review

I love this brave wonderful book! Heidi Durrow’s writing pulls no punches – her voice is true and fresh, and her story believable. This story focuses on Rachel, the sole survivor of a violent and desperate act that destroys her family. She is moved from Chicago to Portland, Oregon to live with her grandmother she was never really met.  Rachel is now the new girl. And the girl with blue, blue eyes; that’s what everyone tells her now. She is the one who has hair that is wild, her new schoolmates remind her. She is the girl some call black though she has never thought about skin color or hair texture or the need to define her world through those definitions. Rachel is many things but most are hidden from the world and some are hidden from her.  Her story is told through the voices of pivotal characters that surround her, some of whom she will never remember. Rachel becomes so much more than what people around her try to mold her into as she grows through childhood into her own adulthood.

This novel is why we read:  to experience beautiful and insightful storytelling – truths told in a very human way with complexity and understanding.
