The Frozen Rabbi - Kepler's Staff Review

Family secrets, everyone has them.  Bernie Karp, a bored teenager and couch potato uncovers the Karp family secret at the bottom of the family freezer. Tossing aside frozen peas and large chunks of meat, Bernie gets his first glimpse at the frozen rabbi that his family has been schlepping around for generations.

This hilarious and surprising story follows the improbable travels of a Polish rabbi frozen solid in pond ice during a freak snowstorm in 1899. One hundred years later, when Bernie witnesses Rabbi ben Zephyer’s surprising thaw back into life, the teen’s horror and disbelief turn into a quest to discover all he can about this moldering relic and his family’s history with him. As the Rabbi animates, so does Bernie.  He rises from the couch, explores his intellectual heritage and changes his life.  But what happens to the Rabbi?

The story moves between the earliest family saga in Poland to the contemporary American Karps’ Memphis home. It tests faith, belief, generational expectations and survival. These characters seem ideally suited for a circus--by turns entertaining, angelic, demonic, but always surprising.  -- Marilyn S.
