The Gingerbread Man has escaped and only Jack Spratt of the Nursery Crimes Division knows how to capture him. But after the Red Riding Hood debacle he is on leave and it's up to Mary Mary and PC Ashley (the alien) to find out who killed Goldilocks, who is blowing up the giant cucumbers, who is selling illicit porridge to the bears, and whether the missing scientist and the Quangle Wangle are tied up in all this. Fforde pulls this clever, gritty hard-boiled detective story together with aplomb. Much better than the first of this series, it's hilarious. --Angela M.
