PREMIER EVENT: David Shields in conversation with Karen Joy Fowler Friday, August 21, 7:30 p.m.
It all began with an idea to make a quirky little documentary about Samantha Matthews' side gig as an English dubber of Italian pornography. But the movie morphed into a book and the book became a literary sensation: That Thing You Do with Your Mouth: The Sexual Autobiography of Samantha Matthews as Told to David Shields.
The best-selling David Shields, author of classics of contemporary non-fiction like Reality Hunger and Black Planet, (and Matthews' cousin), has organized her reminisces into a tour de force monologue, a powerful and sustained look into a contemporary woman's psyche that has everyone from critics to casual readers enthralled.
Now Shields will discuss this sexual autobiography with Karen Joy Fowler and present an audio recording of Samantha Matthews.
David Shields is the author of twenty books, including Reality Hunger (named one of the best books of 2010 by more than thirty publications); The Thing About Life Is That One Day You'll Be Dead (a New York Times bestseller); Black Planet (a finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award); and, due out next year, War Is Beautiful. I Think You're Totally Wrong: A Quarrel, co-written by Caleb Powell, has been adapted by James Franco into a film that premiered in April 2015 at Vancouver's DOXA documentary film festival. Shields's work has been translated into twenty languages.
Karen Joy Fowler is the author of three story collections and six novels, including We Are All Completely Beside Ourselves, which won the PEN/Faulkner Award as well as the California Book Award for Fiction for 2013, and was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize the first year the prize was open to Americans. She is also the author of The Jane Austen Book Club, which was on the New York Timesbestsellers list for nineteen weeks and was made into a major motion picture. In addition, her novel Sister Noon was a finalist for the PEN/Faulkner Award. Consistently acclaimed by critics, most of her titles have been New York Times Notable Books and named to many best-of-year lists.
