We will celebrate the publication of Hosseini’s latest bestseller And the Mountains Echoed. Khaled Hosseini was born in Kabul, Afghanistan, and moved to the United States in 1980. His first two novels, The Kite Runner and A Thousand Splendid Suns, were international bestsellers and published in thirty-eight countries. In 2006 he was named a goodwill envoy to UNHCR, the United Nations Refugee Agency. He and his wife Roya are the co-founders of the Khaled Hosseini Foundation. The Khaled Hosseini Foundation provides humanitarian assistance for the people of Afghanistan. Several decades of war have left millions of refugees in Afghanistan. The Foundation works with the United Nations to build shelters for refugee families. It also provides economic opportunities, education, and healthcare for women and children of Afghanistan. Tamim Ansary was also born in Kabul, Afghanistan in 1948 and has lived in America since 1964. Ansary gained prominence in 2001 when he wrote an email to his friends analyzing what happened on 9/11 and why Americans should avoid visiting destruction upon Afghans in retaliation. His missive was the first case of an email “going viral” on the Internet. It spread to tens of millions of people around the globe within days. Ansary is the bestselling author of several books, including this year’s Games Without Rules, the Often Interrupted History of Afghanistan.
