Prisons, Profits, Principles

The Department of Justice is detaching from contracts with private incarceration companies. Prison activists laud the beginning of the end of prison profitization - but of course the practice isn't restricted to the federal government. States and counties guarantee up to 90% capacity in the contracts they sign with private companies.

In Deep will look first at the "prison industrial complex" - but will go deeper than that. We'll consider larger issues of morality and profit.

Our daily life is awash in the conflict between what's best, and what's profitable. We've seen conflict between consumer health and insurance companies' bottom lines. Concern is growing worldwide over privitization of clean water. War profits have always been controversial.

On the other hand, we all need food to live, and grocery stores are a legitimate, normal part of American life, charging money for sustenance.

When is a profit-centered model appropriate in a given market - and who gets to make that call? Is that a strictly philosophical consideration, or should it have real-world impact on market regulation? How do the answers play out in other democracies?

Panelists include:
Dr. Debra Satz, Stanford University - Marta Sutton Weeks Professor of Ethics in Society, Professor of Philosophy and, by courtesy, Political Science; and Senior Associate Dean for the Humanities and Arts

Corene Kendrick, a Staff Attorney at the Prison Law Office, a nonprofit organization based in Berkeley, California, where she works on class action litigation and the monitoring and enforcement of settlement agreements brought on behalf of incarcerated persons against states and counties.
