An Appalachian Childhood

Introduction by Harriet Scott Chessman

An Appalachian Childhood is a remarkable memoir about growing up on a small, hardscrabble farm in the mountains of Georgia. Unusual in her Appalachian community, the young Deany Brady yearns not only to complete her high school education but to find a way to better her own life, and that of her family’s, by moving to the big city of Atlanta and hoping to gain a college education. An Appalachian Childhood is the first half of a two-part memoir.

Dean Brady is a beloved fixture at Laurel Elementary School in Menlo Park, where she volunteers many hours in the classroom and serves hot lunch to the students. Deany's daughter has taught at Laurel for many years.
