An Evening with Brenda Hillman and Robert Hass

Presented by Poetry Center San Jose and the Montalvo Arts Center

Hillman and Hass will speak and read from their current work and several of their most-loved earlier poems. A highlight of the evening promises to be Hillman reading her heralded poem Pacific Ocean (a p'ansori), based on a Korean folk opera with musical backup by native-trained drummers.

Hillman has published eight poetry collections, including the newly released Practical Water. She has received the William Carlos Williams Prize as well as fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Guggenheim Foundation.

Hass, professor of English at UC Berkeley, was the United States Poet Laureate from 1995 to 1997. He is the winner of the National Book Award, and the 2008 Pulitzer Prize for poetry for his collection, Time and Materials. His newest poetry collection, The Apple Trees at Olema: Selected Poems & Essays, 1985 to 2009, will be published in Spring 2010.
