Madness and Glory is a novel based on the true story of Dr. Philippe Pinel, the doctor who struck the shackles and the chains from the mentally ill during the French Revolution and became the father of modern psychiatry. It is told from the point of view of a patient of Dr. Pinel’s, Guillaume Lalladiere.

Albert Rothenberg M.D., a Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, is currently a Fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University. He has previously written a novel, Living Color, which is part of the York Press distinguished series of Innovative and Modern Fiction. He is the Principal Investigator of the research project "Studies in the Creative Process" and has written numerous articles and books on his investigations of creativity in art, literature, psychotherapy, and science.

Dr. Rothenberg has been awarded Guggenheim and Kovler Awards, is a graduate of Harvard College cum laude, Tufts Medical School, and was trained in psychiatry at Yale Medical School where he later spent many years on the faculty.
