This is one of the most ambitious books I have encountered, as the author seeks to find resolution to an overriding dilemma facing the world today. The dilemma, as Rifkin sees it, is that humanity is currently unequipped to deal with many of the problems it has created. Drawing on a wide variety of disciplines, the author (who has a most impressive resume in both public and private life) suggests that a wholesale shift in human consciousness is necessary if the world is to have a chance to survive. This may not be as difficult as it sounds, as Rifkin paints other key moments in history when technological progress has necessitated a change in our consciousness. For me this was not a book to be rushed through but one to be absorbed; as it is ultimately a book of hope, it was easily worth the effort. Mike C. |
