Kepler's 2020 Project in the News:
This Norwegian fairy tale lies somewhere between Beauty and the Beast and Cupid & Psyche. A beautiful and nameless lassie becomes the house guest of a huge white bear. His home is not the typical den nor is he a typical bear. He lives in a massive palace of dazzling riches and the girl's ill-advised curiosity reveals that he is in fact a bewitched prince (who is dashingly handsome to boot). However, her discovery has doomed him to a terrible fate, he must marry the hideous troll princess. In order to save her love, the lassie must travel to the troll castle which lies in an unknown land east o' the sun and west o' the moon. Will she ever find the castle and free her prince from the troll court? Lewis's retelling of this traditional Scandinavian story is enchanting. Who wouldn't love a heroine who must rescue her prince and undo her own mistakes? This is one of my favorite fairy tales paired with one of my favorite illustrators. Lynch's paintings are lavishly detailed with sweeping lines and fantastic characters. The lassie is glowingly beautiful but real enough to step off the page, take your hand, and lead you off to marvelous adventures. Reviewed by Shannon K. |
