"It has to be set right." That was the message a dying soldier asked British nurse Bess Crawford to give to his brother. However when Bess visits the dead soldier’s home in rural England to discharge her promise, she finds a family harboring a sinister mystery and very determined to keep their secrets.

Bess is not satisfied that the dead soldier’s last request will be fulfilled and begins her own inquiry to decipher his cryptic message. But with the Great War raging and so many touched by it, no one is eager to reopen old wounds. Bess must find a way to set things right before an elusive killer manages to bury all the evidence.

More than a historical mystery, this is a riveting, tense tale about people caught in a physical and psychological landscape devastated by World War I, written with insight and compassion for those wounded in mind as well as body and filled with characters so engaging it is possible to forget there is a savage crime to resolve.
