Kepler's 2020 Project in the News:
A Dignity of Dragons: Collective Nouns for Magical Beasts is a spritely book that is perfect for any young logophile or fantasy lover. Jacqueline Ogburn introduces the reader to collective nouns, one of the strangest oddities of the English language. Rather than starting with the usual gaggle of geese, swarm of ants, or school of fish Ogburn launches us into the wild and wooly land of fantastical beasts. What could be more fun than a faculty of centaurs or a chord of sirens, and a flash of firebirds or a howling of werewolves? We take a marvelous tour of creatures from across the globe ranging from firebirds and manticores to mythical beasts of ancient Greece and a medley of were-beasts. The book also includes an appendix that includes all of the beasts, their country of origin, and a brief definition. This bevy of words is paired with the dreamy illustrations of the award winning Nicoletta Ceccoli. Ceccoli has transformed terrifying beasts of yore into grim but sweet-faced beings that are just soft enough to cuddle but still have a touch of bite. Reviewed by Shannon |
